Booking Through Thursday

And–the reverse of last week’s question. Name one book that you hope never, ever, ever gets made into a movie (no matter how good that movie might be).

I actually didn't join in last week because of a similar prompt from TTT not long before. I am tempted to say all of my favourite books because I don't want the film industry to ruin them. So I am picking out just one and I am trying to pick one that I haven't mentioned in one of these memes before. "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Cray" by Michael Chabon, although I have a feeling it's been picked up for a film already. I think this book would make a wonderful film if done correctly. However, because of it's size a lot of it would be cut out and the film would then lose something. I loved every page of this book. I think only an amazing director would be able to translate the atmosphere (which changes through out) onto the big screen. I would be worried that the film would fail there.

  1. Ah hah! It only took a few answers before I found one like mine. Yes! I have to agree with you on both accounts: K@C should never be turned into a movie based on how incredibly amazing and detailed it is and, on the second note, I hate to see most of my favorites turned into movies.

  3. I agree with you, I don't want the film industry to touch any of my favourite books either.

  4. If only the viewers could make that specific request. However film moguls sometimes pick up the trend of books and make movies out of them to the disappointment of those who have read and understood the books.

  5. I can see your point, though personally I am not opposed to Hollywood turning any of my favorite books into movies. If they botch it, it doesn't ruin the book for me.

  6. I have tried to read this book several times and I can't get into it. What do you like about it?

  7. I don't mind that that my favorite getting made into films. I mean you have to except you are going to get a few stinkers (ie. Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice) but I love films and books together is like a symphony sometimes.

  8. Meg, it was such a sad story and yet filled with hope. The hope that a family or a future can be saved through something so simple as writing and illustrating a comic book. Even when one or both main characters become disallusioned the glimmer is there.

Kate, I can see your point too. Generally it doesn't spoil the book for me but it still angers me/irritates me that a good book can be made a hash of.

  9. Shannon, ha Queen of the Damned is a good example. Had erased that one from my memory. You are right though, it's going to happen and they aren't all going to be good. Plus people interpret books differently so what I think is a bad adaptation someone else might love.

  10. I've never read it (it's high on the TBR though) but I can definitely agree with you. It seems like one of those amazing books that would just be butchered on the big screen.

  11. It's always so hard to decide whether to pick a book you don't want to see made because it's a horrible book and thus would be a horrible movie, or to pick a book that's so awesome, it could never stand up to a screen translation. Love K&C, although its been ages since I read it. Here's my answer:

  12. I've never heard of this one before I will have to check it out. I hate it when they turn books into movies and leaves big sections of it out - usually my favourite parts.
