It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

It's Monday is a book meme by Sheila of Book Journey. It's a fun way for book bloggers/readers to share their reading week.

I finished two whole books last week. Been a while since I have finished more than one. This week is technically my Easter holidays but as I have exams and essays due straight after I will still be spending most of it in the library. No promises of getting two books read this week.

This week I read;

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer - Mark Twain. A re-red for me and one that I read for the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen challenge. I love this book. Funny and full of mischief.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain. I read this for the classics challenge. I chose it this month as I thought it would be perfect to read it straight after Tom Sawyer. Not quite as good as Tom Sawyer but still a lovely book. I did promise to have this reviewed yesterday but completely forgot. Will try to remember to do it tonight. I did do the classics challenge prompt which was about covers. You can see my response here.

Just now I am reading;

Empire State - Adam Christopher. Only just started this one. So far it's living up to it's description of fantasy noir. Set during the 1920's in and alternate New York. I have a feeling I will be reluctant to put it down. I am reading this for the sci fi challenge.

Angelmaker - Nick Harkaway. I really am enjoying this book but because of its size I only read it now and then. As a result I only read 20 pages last week. I haven't even breached the 100 mark. It is very good too so I am going to try and give it more time this week (if Empire State will let me).

Next I plan to read;

Freedom - Jonathan Franzen. I decided to go for this for the modern fiction category of the mixing it up challenge after all. Since I wanted to pick an author that was new too me I would have had to buy a new book for it and I am on a book ban this month. It was it's bulky size that put me off. I'm not normally put off by that but I have been so slow at reading these days that I wanted something easy to read. I am looking forward to it though. Plus after this I will have finished this months challenge reads.

This week I am also going to make a final decision on what to read for the readathon. I promise to post a pic of that when I do.

Hope you all had a good week last week and aren't feeling too ill from lots of chocolate consumption. What was your favourite book last week?

  1. Your reading style and my reading style are very similar. I like to have a lot of books up in the air at the same time. I tend to read more nonfiction than fiction, however, as I have gotten older.

    1. I have noticed that, lol. I read more non-fiction now than what I used to but have always enjoyed it. I probably would read so much more still if it wasn't for university.

  2. Vintage Twain! Wonderful....those were the first two books I checked out of our public library.

    Hope you enjoy your reads....I haven't read Roth in a long while; the last one was The Human Stain.

    Thanks for visiting my blog, and enjoy your week.

    1. Thanks for returning the visit. I am late to appreciating Twain. Quite glad about that though because I'm not sure I would have appreciated it as a kid.

      I need to read more Roth. I want to start at the beginning of his Zuckerman series as the one I read was somewhere near the end.

  5. We read Huck Finn for my book club, which I remember reading in high school - such a great book for discussions! I now want to reread Tom Sawyer.

    Hope you have a great week!

  7. I need to re-read some Mark Twain soon. I only have a vague memory of loving them way back when. Also, everyone (of the blogs I read) in Sweden were all over Jonathan Franzen last year. I'm yet to read anything by him, so I'm on the lookout for other reviews of his books.

    I've been slow with reading (and writing) these past few months and am trying to get back into it. I'm currently reading Middlemarch by George Eliot and it's going so so. I really would like something dark and heartbreakingly sad to read. Any suggestions?

    1. Seemed to be very popular here too. It was one of the reasons why I picked it up when I saw it in paperback. I'm looking forward to it although it's been so long I can't actually remember what it's supposed to be about.

      Hmm, sad and dark? Does it have to be a classic? What about Room by Emma Donoghue? There was a lot of fuss around it last year but it was quite good. Have you read the Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. Whilst it isn't dark it is quite sad (at least I think so). Same with her latest book, The Lacuna. I'm having trouble thinking of a heartbreakingly sad book. Let me have a think.

    2. I read Room last year and it was so-so. Well, at least up until the escape then it lost it's appeal.

      I'll look up Kingsolver and see. I'm bad at explaining the type of sad and heartbreaking books I like. Just gut-wrenchingly sad that make me gasp and almost fall apart. I'm weird that way.

    3. I hope you enjoy Kingsolver. The two I have read I loved.

      I can't think of any books that fall under that category, or at least none that I have read. Hmmm, maybe I need to expand my reading. ;)

  8. I have yet to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer but I plan to. Hopefully this year. I have a goal to read more classics along with my everyday/reviewing reading.

    1. It's a great book and one of the easier to read among all the classics. If you need a break from all the tough ones then this is ideal!
