And it's done!

Goodbye readathon, it has been fun. I managed a total of 19hours reading with a few internet distractions (all readathon related). Not to bad for my first time. I also read four of my five books. I read a total of 1377 pages. I imagine I might have read that last book had I managed that extra five hours in the middle, maybe.

Things I learned;
* I do need a wee nap to break it up otherwise headaches will haunt me
* Poirot rocks
* facewipes and tea help
* I am over YA paranormal romance books.
* Readers make great people.
* check bread is okay beforehand
* more savory snacks than sweet.
* go with gut book wise. Really wanted to finish a history book I was reading for the end but instead read a book form my pile that I didn't enjoy in the end.

I am sure there are more but that's all I remember for now. It is 1pm and it feels like early hours of the morning. I will stay up though as I won't sleep tonight otherwise. More importantly I had fun doing this and I got to see some really cool blogs I might have missed out on otherwise.

I am not going to give a full review of the last book "Shiver" by Maggie Stiefvater. I think it's safe to say I didn't enjoy it. There was nothing wrong with the writing I just found it very boring. Yet another hint that maybe I should stop reading YA books (I know that won't happen though). There was nothing original about it. Boy is a werewolf and in love with a girl who isn't. A little bit more to it than that but not much more. I won't be reading the rest in the series.

Definitely going to take part in this again. I know a number of friends who might be interested too and if I can get my act together organising it then maybe we could raise some money for charity.

Big thanks to everyone who cheered me on. I did appreciate it.

  1. I am similarly over YA paranormal mysteries. I managed a good mix of different books for the Read-a-Thon. 2 mysteries, a science book, historical fiction and memoir. I wish I'd read more though. I did take a long lovely nap from 2-4 and 4:30 to 7 AM. And planning to read more today. So call it an accumulation of 24 hours...

  2. That does sound like a good mix! Breaking up naps sounds like the right idea too.

  3. I think it's important to read lots of different genres. When I was a teen we never had 'young adult' books so I never got into the habit of reading them. I sometimes read one if I want to rest my brain or it's by an author I already love. Saying that I thought Shiver was really well done - but I thought it was more about knowing you're going to lose someone than about werewolves.

  4. You are right. I am very jealous of all the YA books out just now. When I was a young teen there wasn't much choice either. It was limited to point horror and sweet valley (am exaggerating slightl). I quickly moved onto other things thanks to that but at the same time I feel like I missed out.

    You're right about Shiver. It is about knowing your going to lose someone. I trivialised it slightly because I was tired and I didn't particularly like it. I didn't hate it either mind you. It wasn't badly written. The characters were likeable and I think had I read it maybe even only a year ago I would have loved it.

  5. I am in complete awe of you Readathoners! I don't think I would last for even a few hours (could be age related or distraction related). Good job on your boos. Interesting for you to realize you are thinking you are done with YA. Maybe it took a readathon to burn you out?

  6. I didn't think I was last past the 12 hour mark. You should give it a go one time. You don't have to do the full 24hrs. It's a good excuse to cancel everything for reading, lol.
    To be honest I have felt this way about YA for a while now. A very good friend of mine works in a children's library and it's rare for her to read anything but. She usually pushes new titles on to me. In the last year though I have hated more than I have liked and these are books I know I would have enjoyed in the past. I will probably still read them as she passes them on to me since I have liked the occasional one. I just won't be buying them myself. I do have a few in my tbr pile still and will probably read most of those too.
